Do you hate doing laundry as much as I do? Or have you found the perfect laundry schedule and have no trouble getting all the laundry done?
Hey, I’m all for laundry schedules. Absolutely! And I think they are the way to go.
Washing laundry on a schedule has many benefits. These benefits include: never running out of clean clothes to wear, and avoiding overflowing laundry hamper, plus a lot more.
Doing laundry is a part of life. And who wants to go through their whole life stressing out about laundry? Not me! And I’m sure you don’t want to either!
Hey, we do want to get the laundry done and everything but we aren’t looking for a laundry badge or anything, like a badge for being the best at doing laundry…
But it is nice to stay on top of it!
(It’s really sort of boring to talk about doing laundry, but let’s go for it anyway.)
Types of Laundry Schedules
Schedule might be a word that scares you off. “No. Schedules don’t work for me. Uh uh. Count me out”.
Just like not making a decision is making a decision to not make a decision, not having a schedule is a schedule of not having a schedule.
That kind of makes sense. 🤔
So if you’re not a schedule type person, just hear me out, because I never used to be one either. And I still don’t really like them, but they do good things in my life so I like them for that.
It doesn’t work to be “Tiggers” and just bounce through life only doing things when we feel like it. Unfortunately.
There are several ways to make a laundry schedule so you can tailor the schedule to work for you and your life.
There is the weekly schedule, where you wash laundry only on specific days.
The daily schedule is doing specific loads of laundry on certain days, doing laundry every day.
And then there is a schedule where you do each family member’s laundry on certain days. This idea I got from a blog by Erika from livingwellmom.com.
You can check out what she has to say on this type of laundry schedule HERE.
I used to have a weekly laundry schedule where I washed all the laundry twice a week. Until the day my washer decided to quit.
It managed to die a slow death so I wasn’t quite stuck with piles of laundry that couldn’t get washed. But almost.
And that made me panic. What if I couldn’t wash clothes for a whole week? We’re a family of 7 and we need clean clothes!
And that’s when I realized I needed to change my schedule. So that next time my washer decided to quit on me, I wouldn’t be left scrambling to find clean clothes for the whole family.
So.
Let’s talk about the weekly cleaning schedule first. Which works great for a lot of homemakers, just not me. 😊
The Weekly Laundry Schedule
When we were newly weds I did all the laundry for the week in one morning. (can hardly believe that now!) I guess we had a lot of clothes? Because we couldn’t do that now. And we’re not minimalists. I don’t think.
At that time of life, it worked great! And then came babies and laundry piles by the gazillions! But I still managed to keep a basic laundry schedule.
So depending what stage of life you’re at, doing laundry once a week may be enough for you. And that’s great! 👏
Doing laundry twice a week became very normal once several children had joined our family and worked very well. Until the washer gave out.
Here is how the weekly schedule worked.
- Monday-wash and dry all loads
- Tuesday- fold and put away
- Wednesday-woohoo! No laundry!
- Thursday-wash and dry all loads
- Friday-fold and put away
That’s basically how it worked. There were extra loads like towels and bedding that weren’t really included in that schedule, but the clothing all got clean this way.
Some of the clothing, like jeans, get hung to dry. Because, drying them in the dryer makes them shrink. And I don’t want all 4 boys plus hubby going around always looking like they are prepared for high water.
So, that’s the reason for folding laundry the day after washing. It takes a good day and night for jeans to air dry.
The Daily Laundry Schedule
Doing a load or two of laundry every day can make it feel like a never ending cycle of laundry, laundry and more laundry.
That’s because it is.
Sad to say.
Unless you love doing laundry. Then you’re in luck!
But doing a bit every day, gives you more time each day to do other things. Like drink coffee and reading a book.
Here’s how a daily laundry schedule can look like.
That is my laundry schedule and it works really well. We are never out of clean clothes to wear. That doesn’t mean the clean clothes are always in the dresser drawers though.
Hey, at least they’re clean!
But I still go on small guilt trips when everyone is heading to the laundry room to grab clothes in the morning.
Because I read that book instead of folding laundry.
Guilt trips are fun apparently. Because I go on lots of them, and I love to have fun.
(If you go on guilt trips too, let me know. We could maybe go together some time?)
Here is another way to do this daily laundry idea. I got this idea from THIS blog by Erika from Living Well Mom.
Instead of washing certain loads on certain days, wash one family member’s clothes on certain days.
Here are a couple of different ways you can do this type of schedule.
This idea is great and I love it! But. There are not enough days of the week to wash everyone’s clothes twice, for out family.
But if you have less family members than I do, this would really well!
One of the many benefits to having a laundry schedule is that you know exactly what to do each day.
Every morning you know exactly which load you are going to throw in the washer. And it becomes routine and eventually you can do it without thinking.
Especially when you incorporate doing laundry into a routine that gets done the same time every day.
I start a load of laundry once I’m dressed and combed in the morning before I start breakfast. And yes, I can pretty much do it without thinking.
Conclusion on Laundry Schedules
Here are most of the benefits to having a laundry schedule.
- there’s always clean clothes to wear
- doing laundry becomes routine
- so you can do it without thinking
- keeps you on track so you have more time
- to talk on the phone, read a book, drink coffee…
- or anything else you love to do
Laundry schedules can be made different ways to suit your family’s needs whether it’s washing everything weekly or bi-weekly, a family member a day or mixing everyone’s clothes and washing separate loads.
It’s however you want to make it! Scheduling it makes a difference!
