organized sewing space

Sewing in an organized sewing space is so peaceful! I love being organized and organizing, but how to organize is sometimes difficult.

This summer I used my dining room table to sew on since my main sewing space is in another building. And I really wanted to sew where I could be on hand for my children over the summer.

Since I was sewing in the dining room, I needed a place for all my sewing "stuff". There is a cupboard handy for all the stuff but it was pretty helter-skelter.

And that made it difficult to get out the sewing project to work on it. Plus, it was hard to get everything back in when I needed to clean up for the day.

So I decided I needed to organize my sewing stuff so that I could sew with less stress and less mess.

Here is what I did.

Organized sewing space-containers

One piece of expert advice I have received was to use containers to organize, plus treat spaces as containers. And once the containers or spaces are full not to add any more until something was removed from that container.

Here is the cupboard where everything went into. Crammed into, because it was always full. Full of projects to be done and stuff from projects already done. (it has definitely looked a lot worse than shown here!😬 )

So the first thing was to declutter and remove all the things I didn't need for the current project.

Next I got a box that fit into that space in the cupboard and arrange all my necessary things into it.

Like this one. It fits nicely into the cupboard that all my stuff got thrown into before.

Like this. I was so enthused about this!

Organized tools

I put all my sewing tools in this container. Yes, it's an old baby formula can covered with duct tape. 😊

This little bucket holds all my thread, bobbins, and other little sewing accessories.

The pattern and fabric

A ziploc bag became home to the pattern, interfacing and extra fabric for the current project.

The pieces of the dress I was working on went into another ziploc bag.

My sewing machine cords also go into the box so that they aren't a tangle on the floor where I set my machines.

The corner of my dining room where the machines rest.

And how the it looks when I am set up to sew!

Keeping all my sewing supplies in a box keeps the sewing project easy to manage and saves me a lot of extra hassle. It is so easy to just take the box out of the cupboard when I want to sew and then just put everything back into the box and the box in the the cupboard once I am stop sewing for the day.
