Let's talk about how to stay motivated in dressmaking. It's time to sew a dress, or dresses, and we tell ourselves it's time to get moving. A week goes by and nothing happens. We tell ourselves "yup, it's time to get the sewing out." Still nothing happens.
What's the deal? Why isn't there any motivation to get started? There are patterns to use and the fabric stash is well stocked so there is no reason to stall any more.
How is one to just move and get some sewing done?
Let me tell you. It takes a plan. Just a simple plan to get the ball rolling. Just a small win can get the "ball rolling" and keep the motivation going.
I want tell you 3 things, 3 very easy things to do that can help you stay motivated and get some real sewing done.
How to stay motivated: making a dress plan
Ok, so you have fabric and you have patterns. The next thing is to decide what pattern you are going to use for one piece of fabric.
Make a plan. Decide how you are going to sew that one beautiful piece of fabric. Write it down if you have to.
Put the fabric and pattern together in a ziploc bag so that you won't forget what plan you did make. Gather the supplies for the pattern like matching thread, zipper, buttons or whatever notions you need for that pattern.
That's the first step to staying motivated in dressmaking. Make a dress plan.
How to stay motivated: making a sewing plan
Now that you have a dress plan it's time to choose a time to sew. Make a sewing plan. Are you going to sew tomorrow? Next week? With a friend or sister?
Sewing with someone else can help keep the motivation going if that is your style. Some people like to sew alone so that they can concentrate. If that is you, pick a day that has less distractions or plan your day to have less distractions.
Make an appointment with yourself and let your family know you are going to be sewing on this day. Then they know, and you know, and if you don't sew on that day they may ask you why. That way you are more accountable and able to stick with your plan.
The second step to staying motivated in dressmaking is to plan your sewing day.
Making a start to finish plan
Ok, your dress is planned, your sewing day is planned and now it's time to plan the deadline. When you want the dress to be completed. Do you want to work away at the dress throughout the week or get it all done in one day?
You know what you can handle. Yes, sometimes the expectations are pretty high and it doesn't get done in the timeframe you were thinking. So, set a deadline that is very attainable. And then if you get it done before the deadline it's a much bigger win. And we all like to win. 😎
How to stay motivated in dressmaking is to make a dress plan, make a sewing plan and set a deadline. By having those three things in place you know exactly what to do next.
