How to sew a patch pocket: Sewing the pockets

Fold over by 3/8 inch, each long edge of the pocket tape pieces. Press using a hot iron.

Lay the right side of each pocket tape piece on the wrong side of each pocket piece and stitch using 3/8 inch seam allowance.

Press the seam with the pocket tape away from the pocket piece.

Fold the pocket tape to the right side of the pocket, keeping the other pressed edge of the pocket tape folded. Press. Then stitch close to the edge of the pocket tape.

Now fold over and press the side and bottom edges of the pocket by 3/8 inch towards the wrong side of the pocket.

Next place the pockets on the front skirt piece, lining up the top and side of the pocket with the top and side edge of the skirt. Topstitch close to the edge of the fold as shown in the above picture.

And last of all baste the top and side of the pocket. Then continue as normal with the rest of the skirt.

Do you like pockets on your dresses or skirts? What type of pocket do you like the best, one that can be seen like the patch pocket or one that is hidden?
I would love it if you would let me know in the comments below!
I make hidden pockets on my dresses. I’ve been having trouble with the weight of my phone pulling the waist seam down on that side. I’d like a way to remedy that.
Yes the phone can be heavy. I can see it would pull the pocket down especially if the fabric is fairly light weight. Would it help if the pocket was supported with stitching other than just where it’s attached to the side seam? It seems like that could keep it from pulling the waist seam down.
Personally I like the hidden pockets. The best ones for me are the ones attached to the skirt. No seam where the pockets are. Is that the least visible?
I understand. I would think that one would be the least visible.
I haven’t ever done pockets but my little girl has been begging for them! I think I’ll give this a try:)
Hey that’s great!
Hey, Cheryl! How simple and cute! My girls are just starting to get into the pocket idea 😉
Hey thanks! My girl sure thinks pockets are the best 😊
I like pockets that are hidden. I do like pockets on all my dresses.
That’s great. Pockets are so handy!
