What do you do when the dress you had in mind turns into a nightmare in reality?
The dress that looked so good in your mind. The dress that was going to be so beautiful and unique, the best one in the closet. And it just didn't turn out!
For some reason it just doesn't look as good as in that dream.
Your shoulders slump and you wonder what went wrong. And you wonder if you can ever sew another one again.
My sister and I decided to sew ourselves matching dresses back when one of my babies was a few months old.
I was a young mom with a mom figure and she was in her teens and had a young figure.
So of course her dress looked a lot different than mine did.
But here's the thing. The fabric was beautiful, and in my head I was going to look a certain way with that dress on.
But I still had a mom figure. That didn't change with the new dress.
What I had imagined in my mind was that my mom figure wouldn't show as much with that dress on. I didn't want that mom figure to show and as a result, I felt bummed.
I thought I looked awful.
And I thought I was the one at fault.
Is that what you think when your dress doesn't match that dream?
"It's me"
I'm not the right size
I'm not the right shape
I don't have the right looks
But that's not true!
Yes, you may be wishing you looked different, or that you were a different size, but your dreams can still come true!
You can still sew dresses that make you feel beautiful.
Before we go any farther, here is a question for you.
Who made you?
And does the One that made you love you just like you are?
Of course!
God made you beautiful!
Therefore, you can keep dreaming.
And how about giving those dreams some new ideas?
Here are some ideas
try a different pattern design
try a different type of fabric
check the pattern sizing
New pattern designs
There are lots of pattern designs and each design works differently for different body types. Finding a dress design that works well with your body type is one way to finding that dress you are hoping for.
Experiment with something different. The design may be something you wouldn't have thought of trying. Try it!
It might be a design that you haven't seen on any of your friends. There is no harm in giving it a chance. 😊
Just try anything that catches your fancy and see if you can find a design that fits those dreams you have.
New types of fabric
What type of fabric makes you feel good? Or haven't you found that perfect fabric yet?
It doesn't have to be the kind of fabric that is popular right now. It needs to be the type of fabric that makes you feel beautiful and confident about yourself.
Fabric really plays a big part in how your dresses feel and look on you. If it feels good it will most likely look good because you are going to feel like yourself.
For example, you may feel more comfortable in fabric that is flowy or you may feel more comfortable in a more stable type of fabric.
If you feel comfortable and feel like you look good in your dresses you are going to feel more friendly and at ease with yourself.
Pattern sizing
Do your body measurements fall under one pattern size? Or do they match a couple different sizes?
Changing the pattern size may be all you need to do to make that dress of your dreams. Maybe you need to do a little pattern grading or changing the size to fit better.
Sometimes taking for granted that a certain size is needed isn't going to produce the dress we are hoping for.
Measure yourself again, compare with the pattern size chart and you may be surprised that it's time to try a different size.
And again...
Keep dreaming!
experiment with new designs and fabric
accept where you are right now
try again
Keep dreaming and test new pattern designs. Keep dreaming and test different fabrics.
Yes, dreams are free and fabric and patterns are not. But, these dreams can turn into reality. You can make it happen!
Give yourself confidence that you can make those dreams come true.
Accept what shape you are and how you look. And that's half the battle.
Don't wait to sew dresses in case of change. Sew dresses that fit you right now.
And try again! Don't give up when a new design doesn't work out. It's not a failure. It's an experiment.
And experiments are endless. Laugh at them if you need to. 😊
In conclusion
Remind yourself of who made you and that you are beautiful. If the dress does not turn out it is not your fault, you just need to find a design that is meant for you.
Experiment with new designs and fabric to find the perfect ones for you and that make you feel like yourself and at ease with others.
You can do this!
