Custom patterns are the best way to sew a dress that fits. Therefore, those dresses sewn using the custom pattern will get worn a lot because it feels good!
I feel like a broken record with the topic of garment fit. But it makes all the difference in how a dress feels and whether it gets worn or not!
What are custom patterns?
Custom patterns are patterns that are customized to a person’s body measurements so that the pattern will fit that particular person.
Key measurements are taken and used to apply the right shape and design to the sewing pattern. Ease and fit are taken into account and the pattern gets adjusted accordingly.
Two types of custom pattern service
Online cloud type
Certain websites out there such as sewist.com and lekala.com have some of these options. Body measurements are entered. Garment fit choice such as loose, fitted or bodycon etc. is selected. The pattern is generated and is soon ready for download. Then it’s simply download, print, and then tape the pages together to create the full-size pattern.
This type of custom pattern works great if you are ok with still making adjustments to your pattern. Since the pattern is computer generated there are going to be hiccups in the process such as missing seam allowances etc.
I have tried this type of custom pattern and wasn’t happy with the outcome. If I am entering in all my body measurements I would like the pattern to fit quite well. And it wasn’t even close. I had to make a lot of adjustments. So for me that type of pattern wasn’t worth it.
Custom Fitted Pattern service type
This is where someone that is skilled in drafting sewing patterns receives your measurements and then drafts a personalized pattern to your own measurements.
This type is the way to go in my opinion.
You get a real person making your pattern. It is professionally done and fits like a glove.
If done right you will just simply have to cut and sew. There is no need for size grading, no adjusting or making alterations. Which saves so much time! And the dresses fit every time!
Its as simple as that!
Why would I choose a custom fitted pattern?
Using a custom fitted pattern takes all the guesswork out of getting a pattern to fit. Simply cut, sew, and it fits!
There is no frustration with the process of sewing and ripping because adjustments are non-existent.
Sometimes a new dress is needed last minute. Stress is eliminated by using the custom fitted pattern because you can just sew it up without making adjustments. And it fits!
Pros and cons of custom patterns
There are 3 top pros to using custom patterns.
- a great fit because it is made just for you!
- easy sewing process-no adjustments necessary
- time saver-only 1 test garment and you’re good to go!
I really don’t want to say anything negative about custom patterns because I think they’re awesome!
But there are some downsides to them as well. The biggest of course is price. Custom fitted patterns are pricey. A lot time and effort goes into each pattern created just for one particular size and shape. This makes it more expensive than a pattern that can be sold multiple times.
And since custom patterns are higher in price a person isn’t as likely to buy very many. This makes the number of dress designs limited.
But at least each dress will fit even if there isn’t a lot of variety in design. And hey, since you’re not spending time making pattern adjustments you could always use that time to create some new fun details to make the dress special.

It seems like the whole, fit your shoulders and then enlarge as you need to, is missing on some of these other pattern websites. Perhaps we missed a key area with some of those finer measurements. I will be interested to see what you can offer in the plus sized line. Your regular line looks marvelous!!
Thanks for sharing! I agree that fitting the shoulders first is key to having a good fit.
