What to look for in a dress that fits

You may wonder if your dresses really fit. Or you feel like you don’t know very much about fitting and sewing a dress that fits.

So the question is…

What does a good fit look like to you?

When you look at the dresses that you wear or when you look at the dresses other people are wearing, what looks like a good fit to you? What feels like a good fit?

A dress that fits: is it comfortable?

The first thing to check on any dress is comfort. Is the dress comfortable? Do you feel good in the dresses that you wear?

You put on a dress in the morning. How does that dress make you feel? Is it comfortable? Does it feel right to you?

Or do you have to make adjustments to it as you’re wearing it? Like adjusting the neckline because it rides up or down or just wearing a sweater to cover it up.

Feeling good about yourself and being comfortable is very important. And that is what a good fit does for you.

What about going out and being with other people? Do you feel comfortable or do you feel self-conscious?

Comfort in how the dress feels on you and comfort in being around others are part of what makes a dress that fits.

A dress that fits: how does it look?

Now, how does your dress look? Are there any creases or any wrinkles that are out of place? If it’s too tight, there’s going to be creases where the fabric is pulling. Or if it’s too big it’s going to cause wrinkles because there’s too much fabric.

Look in the mirror at your dress and see if there are any areas where you can tell that it’s pulling or where there may be too much fabric and it’s too big. Once you start looking you will probably notice things you haven’t noticed before. Now you know what adjustments to make on the next dress.

The balance

A good balance between too tight or too big goes together with how the dress looks and whether it’s pulling or causing wrinkles.

But the balance again is up to you and it points back to the comfort. What do you feel comfortable in and how do you feel when you go in front of other people?

And just to clarify, too big is not the same as a loose fit. Too big is simply too big.

Find the balance that works for you and what you are happy with. This is about you and your fit and not what others think.

Feeling comfortable in the dresses you wear and finding the look and balance that works for you are all important to creating the fit that you are happy with. The fit that gives you the self confidence you need.

What thoughts go through your mind when you think about fit?
